Overview
Class IV Lasers emit electromagnetic light (near-infrared light waves). When we utilize these light waves for healing, the process is called PHOTOBIOMODULATION. Once the laser light touches the nail, photons (particles of light) penetrate through and “attack” the fungal colony and bacteria without damaging healthy tissue. When our body’s cells absorb the light, studies have shown accelerated cell growth, and increased neutrophils (white blood cells that fights infections). These white blood cells create a crucial line of defense against dermatophytes that cause fungal infections.
Onychomycosis (toenail fungus) affects millions of people and while many find it to just be “ugly,” it can lead to other complications including: spreading to other toes, ongoing pain, and increased chances of developing an ingrown nail. Common symptoms of onychomycosis include: discoloration (often yellow), very thick or very brittle nails, loosening or separation from the nail bed and/or a foul odor. Additionally, toenail fungus is highly contagious. Therefore, if left untreated, it can spread via shared spaces.
