CONDITIONS WE TREAT

Plantar Warts

Safe and effective treatments for plantar (bottom of foot) warts.

Overview

Plantar warts are small, rough growths that develop on the bottom of the foot after the skin is infected with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). They often appear on weight-bearing areas, such as the heel or ball of the foot, and may become uncomfortable when standing or walking. Because pressure can push the wart inward beneath a layer of hard skin, plantar warts can sometimes be mistaken for a callus or corn.

Signs & Symptoms

Common signs of plantar warts include:

  • Rough or grainy growth on the bottom of the foot

  • Small black dots within the wart

  • Thickened or callused skin over the area

  • Disruption of the normal skin lines

  • Tenderness or pain with standing or walking

  • Discomfort when pressure is applied

  • One wart or a cluster of multiple warts

Evaluation & Diagnosis

Plantar warts can often be diagnosed with a simple in-office exam. We will look closely at the area and check for signs that help tell a wart apart from a callus, corn, or other skin condition. In some cases, a small amount of thick skin may be gently removed for closer examination. If the area looks unusual or the diagnosis is not clear, additional testing such as a skin biopsy may be recommended.

Treatment for Plantar Warts

Treatment depends on the size, location, number of warts, and how long they have been present. Treatment options include:

  • Prescription-strength topical medication to gradually destroy the wart tissue

  • In-office treatments that remove or treat the affected skin

  • Debridement to reduce thickened skin and relieve pressure

  • Laser wart removal to prevent recurrence

When To See A Podiatrist

You should see a podiatrist if a plantar wart is painful, spreading, bleeding, changing in appearance, or not improving. It is also important to have the area evaluated if you are unsure whether it is a wart or another type of skin growth. A podiatrist can confirm the diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment to help clear the wart and reduce discomfort. Call our office or click here to schedule an appointment online.
